Last EuroFIT sessions in Norway

Delivery of the EuroFIT programme in Norway for our international trial has wrapped up with the final sessions happening last week. In 12 weeks, we’ll carry out the first post-programme measurements.
SIF hyllet
At the last home game in SIF, participants from the EuroFIT programme were invited on to the field to receive their well earned applause.

SDT 2016 Conference

EuroFIT researcher Marlene Silva (FMH, University of Lisbon) presented ‘The power of football: Using self-determination theory to promote health behavior change in the European Fans in Training (EuroFIT) project’ at the Sixth International Conference on Self Determination Theory in Victoria, Canada on 04 June 2016.

The project received lots of interest and questions researchers from the US and Australia were very interested in adapting the idea to their countries (using other sports because of cultural reasons).

EuroFIT project meeting in Lisbon

The team had a very productive meeting in Lisbon, 10 – 11 May 2016, hosted by FMH. We discussed progress of the randomised controlled trial of the EuroFIT programme. We’ve completed the 12 week measures in the UK, Portugal and the Netherlands and delivered the programme in Norway. Planning for the next phase of the project, replication of the programme in new clubs and adapting EuroFIT to other groups, was also a key focus of the meeting.

EuroFIT training continues in Den Haag

Participants from the EuroFIT programme at ADO Den Haag have continued their training after the programme. Bas Muijs, a former actor from a famous Dutch soap opera who is an ambassador for making Den Haag city more active, visited a training session.

You can watch a video of the training here!

Life after EuroFIT in the Netherlands

We’re delighted to see that participants in the EuroFIT trial have remained active after completing the programme!

On 09 April, the Vitesse team played against ADO Den Haag in the League. As part of the national attention to Dutch Premier League Community work, the EuroFIT men played a match before the ‘real’ match on the training venue of Vitesse. Afterwards, they were invited to watch the game in the Vitesse stadium.
There are lots of great photos of the match from both ADO DenHaag and Vitesse!

Continued Meetings
In almost all our Dutch clubs, men are still meeting up after the program has ended:

  • At Vitesse, one group moved to a local football club and is meeting on a weekly basis, while the other group has organised walking activities.
  • At ADO Den Haag, the club facilitates continued trainings in the stadium. 20 of the 30 men train each week and they pay the club to use the field, coaches and other facilities.
  • At PSV, small groups meet for walking/running activities, and some are training for a walking/running event.
  • At FC Groningen, the men are organising a tournament for the beginning of July. They have invited EuroFIT men from the other clubs to compete.

EuroFIT Systematic Review on Health Evidence

On 07 April, 2016, Prof. Mutrie and Dr. Martin from the University of Edinburgh shared the findings of the EuroFIT systematic review on interventions with potential to reduce sedentary behaviour in adults with Public Health Professionals and Researchers during a webinar hosted by the Canadian organisation Health Evidence.

Our review was selected due to the high quality rating it received and the popularity on the Health Evidence website.

The webinar slides and the voice recordings can be found here:

Graduation Ceremony in Man City

EuroFIT participants at Manchester City Football Club had a graduation ceremony to mark the end of their programme.

The coaches put together a presentation to summarise the programme, including participant achievements and reflections (slides 17+).

Well done!

Coach Training in Norway

The eight coaches who will be delivering the EuroFIT programme in Norway successfully completed their training last weekend (13 – 14 Feb 2016).

The two-day training gave the coaches some practical experience of delivering key components of the EuroFIT programme, related to diet, physical activity and sedentary behaviour.
