EuroFIT features in EU Horizon magazine

EuroFIT has been featured in Horizon, the EU Research & Innovation magazine.

Prof. Sally Wyke describes the EuroFIT programme:

What we’re offering is a programme where supporters get together in the football stadia to get more activity.

There is some explanation and discussion, and a lot of friendly banter, along with some movement too.

It’s like a night at the pub, but without the alcohol.

The EuroFIT pilot study, which is taking place at Everton Football Club, reached the half-way point on 25th June. A regular group of eight men are participating in the pilot. The men have all received SitFITs to help them keep track of their daily step count, the amount of time they spend sitting and the amount of time they spend upright. The Everton coaches have encouraged the men to use the information from the SitFIT to practice self-monitoring and to set step and upright time goals each week.

Amongst many activities, the first six weeks of the programme has seen men go on a walking tour of Goodison Park, carry out physical activity in the stands and beside the pitch, play a game of walking football, discuss healthy eating, and think about the things that can prevent them from being as active as they would like to be.

The research team are using the study to assess how men and coaches respond to the programme and to reflect upon the time that is allocated to each of the activities. The learning we take from this study will be used to refine and finalise the programme before it is applied in the EuroFIT Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) later this year.

Formal Partnerships Signed with Clubs in Portugal

In a public event at the Universidade de Lisboa, FC Porto, Sporting CP, and SL Benfica signed formal partnership agreements with the host institution, the Faculty of Human Kinetics (FMH).

EuroFIT researcher Pedro Teixeira gave a presentation about the project to an audience that included researchers, government and sporting officials, former athletes, and FMH staff and students. The clubs will deliver the EuroFIT programme on club grounds starting later in 2015.
